Black versus white median asking prices

Black versus white median asks across 16 common model/year/mileage/customs groups.

From the color map to the price question

White, black, grey and silver account for roughly three quarters of advertised SUVs and sedans in our recent color map. Those neutral colors offer buyers the largest range of alternatives. White and black also provide enough overlap for a closer asking-price comparison.

The 6 September reading contains 16 common groups, holding make, model, model year, 50,000-km mileage band and customs status constant. Together, they contain 162 white-car advertisements and 199 black-car advertisements. All 16 groups consist of vehicles awaiting customs clearance.

Black cars had lower median asks in nine groups, higher asks in six, and the same median in one. The median of the group-level gaps was −1.9%, with black compared against white.

  • Below white-car median — Groups: 9
  • Above white-car median — Groups: 6
  • Equal to white-car median — Groups: 1

The same model can point in opposite directions

The Chevrolet Trailblazer provides a useful close-up. For 2023 models below 50,000 km, the black-car median ask was $15,800, against $16,650 for white cars: 5.1% lower.

For the same model year at 50,000–99,999 km, the order reversed. Black cars had a $15,500 median against $14,500 for white cars: 6.9% higher.

The 2022 Trailblazer's 50,000–99,999-km group had equal medians and equal advertisement counts. The Trax comparisons, meanwhile, both favored black cars, but by different amounts.

These are useful price ranges for someone comparing actual offers. Color comes attached to a particular vehicle's trim, condition, history and specification.

Jetta asks favor black; BMW asks favor white

The 2021 Volkswagen Jetta groups both show a lower black-car median. The gap was $400 at 50,000–99,999 km and $1,850 at 100,000–149,999 km.

The BMW X5 comparisons point the other way. Black-car medians were $1,100 higher for 2015 models at 150,000–199,999 km and $1,300 higher for 2019 models at 100,000–149,999 km.

  • Volkswagen Jetta, 2021 — Mileage band: 50,000–99,999 km; White / black ads: 16 / 12; White median ask: $15,000; Black median ask: $14,600; Black gap: −2.7%

Across all 16 groups, the black-versus-white gap ranges from −12.5% to +6.9%. The repeated change in direction makes the specific vehicle group more useful than a single color ranking.

What remains inside the comparison

The broad vehicle groups align model, year, mileage band and customs status. Exact mileage still varies within each band, along with trim, engine, powertrain and condition.

For example, the black 2019 BMW X5 group has a median stated mileage of 145,600 km, compared with 124,000 km for the white group, while its median ask is higher. Vehicle specification and history are therefore essential parts of an individual comparison.

All the prices here are asking prices for uncleared cars. The applicable clearance cost and the vehicle's repair requirements belong alongside the ask when a buyer builds a purchase budget.

Keep both colors in the shortlist

A buyer open to both black and white gains access to more alternatives in these common models. The observed price advantage changes by model, year and mileage band; even the two 2023 Trailblazer groups point in opposite directions.

The practical order is model and specification first, vehicle condition next, then the combination of price and preferred color. That approach makes the widest use of the offers already on the market.

Color-level asking-price differences vary by vehicle group; compare the individual car's specification, condition and clearance budget.
