42.8% of Listings Show a 17-Character VIN-Format Value
7,725 of 18,040 listings — 42.8% — contain a 17-character value matching the VIN character format. The rate peaks at 55.4% in the $10,000–15,000 band and falls to 20.1% below $5,000 and 18.7% above $50,000. A format match is not VIN validation.
What the metric counts
Of 18,040 listings, 7,725 (42.8%) contain a 17-character value made only of characters allowed in a modern VIN. Another 620 records contain an eleven-asterisk mask and are excluded.
This is a format measure, not VIN validation. A matching value may still be mistyped, duplicated or belong to another vehicle. It becomes useful only after the buyer compares it with the car and checks an appropriate external source.

What a buyer should do
Ask for the complete identifier and compare it with the vehicle before relying on it. For a modern 17-character VIN, verify the format and then use the relevant manufacturer, authorised service or official recall and history source.
A format match is a starting point, not a clean-history certificate. A missing value is not evidence that a car or seller is unsafe; it means the listing alone does not provide that identifier.
listings on 11 August 2026. A value matches the VIN format when its trimmed uppercase form contains exactly 17 characters from A–H, J–N, P, R–Z and 0–9. This does not validate the check digit, uniqueness, vehicle match, history or recall status. Of 7,725 matching listings, 6,589 distinct values were observed. Asking prices, not transactions; platforms are anonymised as A/B/C.
