A 1.8% US Price Move Gives $360 of Room on a $20,000 Reference

August prices for three-year-old vehicles fell 1.8%. A purchase budget must translate that signal into dollars before comparing condition and costs.

The younger-car signal

Cox Automotive reported a 1.8% August decline in its three-year-old MMR price measure. Its commentary also described greater resilience among older, more affordable cars. This gives buyers a reason to compare age groups separately. A national wholesale signal is most useful as a starting point for a bid budget that also names the vehicle, condition and total delivery requirements.

Turn the percentage into a decision amount

Applied as a sensitivity to assumed starting values of $10,000, $20,000 and $30,000, a 1.8% decline equals $180, $360 and $540. These dollar amounts show the scale of the move; individual auction lots follow their own bidding and condition. At the $20,000 reference, a newly discovered $500 repair requirement exceeds the $360 price-move allowance by $140. The repair amount is an explicit example.

Compare like purchase candidates

Put two candidates on the same sheet: expected purchase amount, auction charges, inland transport, sea transport, clearance and required repairs. Ask for condition evidence before raising a bid ceiling. A cheaper car with greater repair needs can consume the apparent saving before it reaches the road. A newer car may also carry a higher absolute purchase amount even after a larger percentage decline.

Budget room is most useful before bidding

A bid ceiling gives the buyer a clear stopping point when competition intensifies. If the available evidence leaves a wide repair range, calculate both ends before the auction starts. The lower purchase price can then be assessed against the less favourable repair case. This keeps a small wholesale movement in proportion to the much larger decision about which particular vehicle and condition to accept.

Use the signal to set a ceiling

Start from the maximum complete budget, reserve known non-purchase expenses and a clearly chosen repair allowance, then calculate the remaining bid ceiling. Reassess if the condition report changes. The useful result of this month’s age split is more selective comparison between candidates. The arithmetic shows how much room 1.8% creates at assumed prices; each vehicle still needs its own cost and condition assessment.
