For the identical model and year — regardless of location — asking prices spread 40–80%. Here's what separates a good buy from an overpay, and the two levers that drive the gap.
The spread is real
If you've shopped for a used car in Georgia, you've seen it: two listings for the same model, same year, wildly different prices. This is not noise — it's systematic. And the data shows exactly what drives it.

The spread by model (2020 model year, p10 → p90)

A 2.2× spread on a 2018 BMW X5 means the cheapest decile costs $16,000 while the most expensive decile costs $35,100 — for the "same" car. The gap is not geography. It's these two levers.
Lever 1: Customs status
The single biggest price driver within a model-year cohort is whether the car is customs-cleared or uncleared.

A cleared car costs about 25% more because the importer has already paid the excise and import duty — those costs are baked into the asking price. An uncleared car is cheaper on paper, but the buyer faces the customs bill when (or if) they clear it.
This is the most common reason a "cheap" listing looks cheap: the customs costs haven't been added yet. For a 2.0-litre car aged six years or under, that's 3,000 GEL (~$1,100) in excise alone; for a car over six years, it's 9,000 GEL (~$3,300). The price gap reflects real cost differences, not seller generosity.
Lever 2: Mileage
The second major driver is mileage — and its effect is almost as large as customs status.

From the lowest to highest mileage band, the price drops about 29% — put the other way round, a low-mileage car (under 80,000 km) commands roughly 40% more than one over 200,000 km. A high-mileage car is genuinely worth less — but it's also more likely to have an unclear service history, wear-related issues, and a shorter remaining useful life.
The payoff
A cheap listing is usually uncleared + high-mileage; the premium is cleared + low-mileage. The spread is not noise — it's these two levers.
When you see a listing priced 30–40% below the median for its model and year, check two things before assuming it's a deal: (1) is it customs-cleared or uncleared? and (2) what's the mileage? In most cases, the "cheap" price reflects an uncleared car with high mileage — not a bargain.
Conversely, when you see a premium listing, you're typically paying for a cleared car with low mileage. Whether that premium is worth it depends on your use case — but at least you'll know what you're paying for.
