Model-Year Cohorts: Two Flat Median-Price Steps in Listings

listings from 2016–2024 show uneven cohort medians, including equal $13,800 medians for 2019–2020 and $15,500 for 2021–2022. These are separate distributions, not paired-car upgrades.

A map of inventory composition

Median asking prices rise unevenly across model-year cohorts. The active-stock medians are equal at $13,800 for 2019 and 2020, and equal at $15,500 for 2021 and 2022. These are descriptive cohort statistics.

Descriptive, unadjusted medians.

Why this is not an upgrade calculator

Price and mileage medians are computed independently across heterogeneous cars. They do not show that a comparable 2020 car costs the same as a 2019 car while also having 14,000 km less mileage. Make, model, trim, condition, engine, customs status and seller mix all change between cohorts.

The four model panels are selected high-volume models, not the market top four. They show that composition matters even within nameplates; they still do not control trim, mileage or condition.

How to use the chart

Use it to see where active advertised supply clusters. Questions such as the cost of upgrading a comparable car or a possible “chip-crisis premium” need matched make-model-year samples and multivariable adjustment.
