Reading the usage-intensity ladder
The ladder tracks two things at once, and honest reading keeps them apart.
Model-year context. Tesla and Subaru have median model years 2021 and 2020,
while Mercedes-Benz is at 2017. Their median odometers are 81,800, 98,600 and
113,600 km respectively; the per-year measure combines age and odometer readings.
Chevrolet and Kia each show a median 16,000 km per year of age in this
advertised-stock reading, while Mercedes-Benz shows 13,000.
The table is a descriptive comparison of listed odometers and model years by make.
Interpreting the measure
Reported odometers are the input to this measure. The result is a usage profile for
the advertised fleet, expressed as a median odometer per year of age.
Usage intensity = stated odometer divided by age in years; this is the median profile of advertised stock.
