The Manual Gearbox Left Georgia One Model Year at a Time
Manual transmissions are 23.7% of advertised cars built before 2010, 6.0% of 2010–2015 cars, 2.0% of 2016–2020 cars and 0.8% of 2021-and-newer cars — 42 listings out of 5,173. What survives is not one market but two: cheap old sedans at $4,200 and enthusiast coupes at $12,500.
Manual share of listings, by build era
704, 2,456, 4,356 and 5,173 listings state a transmission in the four bands.
One cross-section, four generations
Fleet change usually takes years to see. This one is visible in a single cross-section of the market, because the model year on each card is a timestamp of when the car was built and Georgia imports across the whole range at once.
Sort the listings on offer into four age bands and the manual share falls off a cliff. Cars built before 2010: 23.7% manual (167 of 704). 2010 to 2015: 6.0% (148 of 2,456). 2016 to 2020: 2.0% (88 of 4,356). 2021 and newer: 0.8% — 42 manual cars out of 5,173.
That is not Georgian taste changing. It is what the world's manufacturers stopped building, arriving here on a delay. Georgia is a used-import market; the gearbox mix of its newest cars is decided in Ulsan, Toyota City and Wolfsburg several years before the cars reach Poti.

Median asking price of manual listings, by body type
445 manual listings in total; body types with fewer than 14 cards are omitted.
The cheapest cars in the market — and some of the least cheap
The median manual listing asks $6,500, against $13,500 for an automatic. Read alone, that looks like a heavy discount for a third pedal. It is mostly age: the median manual car is a 2013 model with 150,800 km, while the median automatic is 2020 with 92,800 km. Compare like with like and the discount mostly vanishes — among 2010–2015 cars, manual asks $6,200 against $7,000 for an automatic.
But averaging across the manual stock hides that it is two unrelated markets sharing one label.
The larger one is old and cheap: 123 manual sedans at a median $4,200, plus 32 hatchbacks at $4,250 and 47 wagons at $5,500. These are the last of an earlier import era, and their price is set by their age, not their gearbox.
The smaller one is neither old nor cheap: 59 manual coupes at a median $12,500, 18 pickups at $11,750, 14 minibuses at $13,000. A manual coupe in this market asks three times what a manual sedan asks. It is being bought for what it is, not because it was the affordable option.

Two pedals, three different mechanisms
Collapsing everything that is not a manual into 'automatic' throws away most of what the data records. Four labels are counted separately as recorded: automatic 7,098, tiptronic 3,188, variator 1,958, manual 445. One caveat belongs here rather than in a footnote: tiptronic is not a fourth mechanism. It is the manual-shift mode of an automatic gearbox — a badge several manufacturers put on the shift gate — so those 3,188 cards are automatics carrying a different label, and mechanically they can overlap with the 'automatic' family. Of the three automatic-side labels only the variator is a genuinely different construction.
They are not interchangeable to own. A variator — a continuously variable transmission — is a different mechanism with a different service history and a different repair bill from a torque-converter automatic, and it is concentrated in specific supply: of 1,958 variator listings, 1,471 are petrol, 200 hybrid and 169 LPG-converted.
The price differences between the automatic-side labels are real in the data — the 2021-and-newer variator median is $30,250 against $16,700 for automatic — but we do not read that as a price paid for the mechanism, and the tiptronic label in particular is not compared as if it were a separate construction. As with drivetrain, the label tracks which brands built which cars, and at these sample sizes we cannot separate the two. It is reported as composition, not as a valuation.
What the flow says
Newly advertised cars tell the same story with a small twist. The manual share of monthly new listings has run 3.1%, 2.7%, 3.3%, 2.9%, 4.0%, 3.8% since March — flat, with a mild uptick in July and August. That is not a manual revival; the newest cars barely offer the option at all, so the number is set by how many older cars happen to enter the market in a given month.
For a buyer the practical reading is short. If you want a manual car in Georgia, you are shopping in the pre-2016 stock or in a small enthusiast niche, and you should expect the search to be constrained by supply rather than by price. If you are selling one, the scarcity does not translate into a premium anywhere except the coupe segment.
