The Great Auto Export Reset of 2026: Why Exports Are Dropping and Prices Are Falling
Passenger car exports from Georgia plummeted 24.1% in Jan-Feb 2026. How EAEU regulations, recycling fees, and the April 1st excise deadline are reshaping the local market — and why it's now a buyer's market.

Why the "Way to the East" Closed
The main blow fell on the routes that sustained Georgian re-exports for the past two years. Exports to Kyrgyzstan crashed by 33%, and to Kazakhstan by 35%. The reasons are not a lack of cars, but a "technical trap" that snapped shut in February 2026.
Since February 11, 2026, the EAEU has implemented a mandatory electronic navigation seal system. Every car carrier entering from Georgia is now tracked in real-time. The "false transit" scheme has become physically impossible. Meanwhile, progressive recycling fee scales raised the cost of legalizing a car from Georgia by $10,000–$12,000.
New EAEU rules (Decision No. 87) equate the import of cars "for personal use" to commercial import if the car is resold within a year. This killed the margin for most budget and mid-price models.

The "April 1st" Factor: Last Chance for the Older Fleet
Starting April 1, 2026, new excise tax rates for the primary registration of vehicles that do not meet modern environmental standards (Euro-5/6) and cars older than 10 years will come into force in Georgia. For dealers holding 2010–2015 models, this is a ticking time bomb.
There are currently 519 active listings in the 2010–2014 segment and another 279 cars pre-dating 2010. Owners have limited time to sell before the cost of registration becomes prohibitively high. We are already recording sharp price reductions (up to -$1,500) in this segment.
Key Insights
Export filter disabled: You no longer have to compete for a car with buyers from Aktau or Bishkek.
Deadline effect: Sellers of the older fleet (2010–2015) are highly negotiable due to the April 1st law.
Abundance of choice: With a market backlog of 16 days, the buyer is once again king.
