When Does Lower Diesel Consumption Still Save Money?
At GEL3.60 for petrol and GEL4.67 for diesel, an 8 L/100 km petrol car sets a diesel break-even point of 6.17 L/100 km.
Efficiency has a price threshold
The September fuel ranges reported by BM.ge put regular petrol at GEL3.60–3.79 and diesel at GEL3.45–4.67 per litre. The useful comparison is cost per distance: litres per 100 km multiplied by the price per litre. Lower consumption creates a saving only when it compensates for the fuel price paid. Station choice and the grade required by the manufacturer therefore belong in the comparison.

A demanding price pair
Take a petrol car using an assumed 8 L/100 km at GEL3.60: fuel costs GEL28.80 per 100 km. With diesel at GEL4.67, equal spending occurs at 6.17 L/100 km, rounded from 28.80 divided by 4.67. A diesel car using 6 litres costs GEL28.02; at 7 litres it costs GEL32.69. The first saves GEL0.78 per 100 km and the second costs GEL3.89 more.

What that means over a year
At an assumed 15,000 km a year, the 6-litre diesel saves GEL117 in fuel against the petrol example, while the 7-litre diesel adds GEL583.50. These amounts are highly sensitive to the selected prices. The pair deliberately combines the published low regular price and high diesel price to test an unfavourable case. Buying both fuels elsewhere changes the threshold, sometimes substantially.
Why comparing the same route matters
Consumption should come from comparable use. A diesel motorway trip and a petrol trip in stop-start city traffic combine the powertrain difference with a route difference. Compare the same commuting pattern, passenger load and season where possible. If the buyer mostly drives short urban journeys, use that pattern for the calculation before assigning value to a lower quoted combined-consumption figure.
Compare the vehicles you can actually buy
Use your own urban and highway consumption, the permitted fuel grade and the price available on your normal route. Then compare purchase price, necessary servicing and likely ownership period. A small annual fuel saving leaves little room to recover a purchase premium. These are fuel-only scenarios with assumed consumption: mechanical condition and maintenance needs require their own budget.
