Lari Asks Were Lower in 13 of 21 Comparable Car Groups
Across 664 advertisements in comparable model-year, mileage and customs groups, lari-denominated offers had the lower median in 13 groups and the higher median in eight. The middle group had a 2.9% lower lari-equivalent ask.
Moving from currency share to price comparison
Our earlier currency map showed that dollars were the original asking currency in 63.3% of advertisements at the 31 August reading, while lari accounted for 36.6%. The next buyer question is more specific: how do the two currencies compare within the same broad vehicle choice?
A 6 September reading finds 21 groups with advertisements in both currencies, holding make, model, model year, 50,000-km mileage band and customs status constant. Together, they contain 508 dollar-priced advertisements and 156 lari-priced advertisements.
All lari amounts are converted at the National Bank of Georgia's official rate effective 5 September: GEL 2.6126 per US dollar. This gives both sets of asking prices one common comparison rate.
Lari-equivalent price gaps in comparable vehicle groups
Percentage difference between lari-equivalent and dollar median asks; negative values indicate lower lari offers.
More lower lari asks, with substantial exceptions
The lari-equivalent median was lower in 13 groups and higher in eight. The middle of the 21 group-level percentage gaps was −2.9%.
- Lower median ask in lari equivalents — Groups: 13
- Higher median ask in lari equivalents — Groups: 8
- Total groups — Groups: 21
The range was wide: from a lari-equivalent median 30.3% lower to one 11.0% higher. Currency alone is therefore a weak shortcut for choosing the cheaper offer; the model-level comparison carries much more information.

Six comparisons show both directions
The table converts the median original lari ask to US dollars and rounds the displayed result to the nearest dollar. Percentage gaps use the unrounded values.
- BMW X5, 2020 — Mileage band: 50,000–99,999 km; Customs status: Cleared; USD / GEL ads: 32 / 5; Dollar median: $37,500; Lari median in USD: $35,113; Lari gap: −6.4%
- Hyundai Elantra, 2022 — Mileage band: Below 50,000 km; Customs status: Awaiting clearance; USD / GEL ads: 44 / 6; Dollar median: $13,500; Lari median in USD: $13,502; Lari gap: +0.0%
- Hyundai Elantra, 2023 — Mileage band: Below 50,000 km; Customs status: Awaiting clearance; USD / GEL ads: 38 / 5; Dollar median: $13,700; Lari median in USD: $15,200; Lari gap: +11.0%
- Toyota Camry, 2025 — Mileage band: Below 50,000 km; Customs status: Awaiting clearance; USD / GEL ads: 22 / 23; Dollar median: $24,000; Lari median in USD: $22,607; Lari gap: −5.8%
- Toyota Camry, 2025 — Mileage band: Below 50,000 km; Customs status: Cleared; USD / GEL ads: 8 / 13; Dollar median: $25,500; Lari median in USD: $26,793; Lari gap: +5.1%
- Volkswagen Jetta, 2021 — Mileage band: 50,000–99,999 km; Customs status: Awaiting clearance; USD / GEL ads: 51 / 5; Dollar median: $15,500; Lari median in USD: $10,798; Lari gap: −30.3%
The nearly equal 2022 Elantra asks are a useful counterpoint to the larger differences. For low-mileage 2025 Camrys, the direction also changes with customs status: lari offers are lower in the uncleared group and higher in the cleared group.

The gap belongs to the offers
Even inside these groups, trim, engine, powertrain, equipment and condition can differ. The low-mileage 2023 Elantra group, for example, contains a different stated petrol/hybrid mix in each currency. The two groups are alternatives a buyer encounters, with their own vehicle specifications.
The Jetta's large gap is a reason to compare the individual cars closely. Its lari group contains five advertisements against 51 dollar offers. Stated asking prices, specifications and repair requirements all belong in that comparison.
The −2.9% figure is the median of the 21 group percentage gaps. It gives each group one position in the comparison, while the advertisement counts in the table show how much choice sits behind each example.
Put the settlement amount next to the car
For a buyer, a common-rate conversion is the first step. The next is to confirm the currency in which the seller will accept payment, the conversion rate actually applied at settlement, and the car's customs status.
At the official comparison rate, a $15,000 ask corresponds to GEL 39,189. A seller's agreed settlement rate can produce a different payable amount. Putting the original ask, converted comparison and agreed payment amount side by side keeps that distinction visible.
The strongest comparison combines those amounts with the vehicle's specification and condition. The 21 groups offer plenty of lower lari asks, but also enough higher ones to make a currency-only search unnecessarily restrictive.
The median group gap is −2.9%; trim, powertrain, equipment and vehicle condition can differ within each group.
